Twenty first century technology is changing every day. This class has opened my eyes to so many different technology and software that are available to me for free on the web. When you here about social networks you only hear about Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. There are so many other networks that are great to use. The technology that I have learned in this class, allowed me to complete many projects this semester in one of my Telecommunications class.
I used Adobe Photoshop and Google Sites to create a brochure for a business plan project in my Entrepreneur Journalism class. I created a brochure for my business plan presentation and used Google Sites to develop a website for my proposed company. I still do not have a Facebook account but I learned that in Telecommunication there are Search Engine Optimization (SEO) jobs. I can use Facebook to help my company reach their customers base. Use Twitter to see what people are saying about the company. Use YouTube to promote the company. Develop a blog to create inbound and outbound links to the company’s website. I will be able to use Adobe Photoshop to create graphics to be posted on the website. I look forward to using all that I have learned with 21st Century Technology in my field for the rest of my life.
I have fallen in love with the Mac a computer that I had no interaction with, yet my college is requiring students to have a Mac. To be able to have some knowledge of how to use the Mac before I purchase one was a great experience. The ever changing Web 2.0 technology is something that will continue to evolve. The copyright and intellectual property rap was unique and creative. Most rapper writes their own lyrics, but to take a law and rap it I have to give some props. Open source software and cloud computing is a process that many companies and organization can use to enhance their online product or save money in their budget. The Digital Storytelling Resource allowed me to personally and emotionally share my son’s story with many friends and family members. The Garage Band Podcast not my best work but I learned how to edit sound. Final Cut Pro also is a tool that I will have some knowledge of when I begin to take production classes next semester. I am looking forward to become a part of Second Life. This has been a class that has taught me so much about technology that I will continue to use for the rest of my life.
This video shows the transformation into 21st Century technology.

Second Life Gaming
Gaming is something that I have done at some point in life. PAC-MAN, MRS. PAC-MAN, Galaxy, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario, ok so I am really old. I once had a Nintendo 64 game system and played John Madden Football and NBA Live. I played until my thumbs started hurting so I packed away the game, never to play again. I have never played Second Life. It is an interesting concept.
Second Life is a virtual world video game that I will be able to use as a production student. I can use it to create a concept for a movie, television program, or commercial story board. I will be able to use it to tell a story to a client that I am creating a commercial idea, or to pitch a movie or television program idea to a studio. I will participate in a project on Second Life done by a graduate student. I look forward to participating in the study.
Gaming is a great tool for education. I do believe used correctly it will revolutionize education. Like many I do not believe in the violence that many games portray, but it is education. I never use to look at it as educational, but the Marc Prensky article “What Kids Learn That’s Positive From Playing Video Games” is correct. Every game play you have to learn how to play, and the competitive drive of wanting to score the highest score. It means you have to learn how to maneuver from level to level in order to be successful. There is a place for video games in society and in the classroom. Will educators embrace the many versions of video games that are helping kids to have fun while learning how to play the game? People marrying and divorces in the virtual world are a little too much for me but hey if it makes you happy then I can’t argue with it. People killing people in the virtual world how is it that you are using something to escape into a Second Life yet having the same behavior that you do in the real world is a little crazy to me.
The video below is about second life tutorial.

Creating a Professional Web Presence
Creating a professional web presence was an interesting activity for me. I never created a website before so I started out believing that it would be a challenge. As I began the project I found that it was easy to maneuver Google Sites and to edit each web page. I did not believe that I had any material to place on the site but then realize that I had a resume. Then came time to work on the portfolio page and I did not have a clue what previous projects I worked on that I could place on the page. I began to Google my name in search of something that I may come across and found the articles that I wrote for Scout.com. I was able to import those links to the page with ease. I really enjoyed using Google Sites to build my website.
I will be able to use the professional web presence in my major to input information onto websites. I would love to work with sports interactive media companies like SEC Digital Network. I would also have the opportunity if I worked in a television newsroom or radio station to work on the website of the company I work for. I will produce information for on air use, and also create content for the company’s websites embedding the information into the website. I would like to learn more about web presence.
I believe that with the easy to use Google Sites people will be able to create websites that easily meets their needs. Many start-up charities or small business that does not have the funding to pay a web developer to design a website will be able to develop a website by using Google Sites. I would not have believed that the development of Distance Education or Virtual Schooling began back in 1728. Distance Education has been beneficial to me, allowing me to take some of my classes online. I have had Online learning classes and Blending learning classes. I have taken online classes because of the flexibility. It allows me to work a fulltime job and still complete my educational requirements. I have a friend that is a vice-principal in Alachua County and she is not a fan of Florida Virtual School. She says that if the children are not self-starters they will not be able succeed in Florida Virtual School. I am the board chair for a school named AMIKids Gainesville and because of teacher certification issues we were going to go with the Florida Virtual School in the class room and in my research I found that many educators did not like the alternative. The School Board of Alachua County was not pleased with the idea either so we scrapped the idea.
I selected a tutorial video that shows how to create websites on Google Sites.

Open Source Software and Cloud Computing
Open source software and cloud computing has become a part of my life. I have learned so much about open source software and cloud computing from using it in school and in life. I use Mozilla Firefox, Google Docs, Blogger, Wiki, and Drop box and that is just at work. I have learned about openoffice.org and Gimp in class.
Open source software and cloud computing are product that I can use as a production student. Currently in the Telecommunication College when you volunteer to work on WUFT newscast you have to sign up to the Google listserv that sends out the scheduling every week. I have an entrepreneurial class that I am currently using Google Sites to create a website image for a business plan, and will be able to use Gimp to create a brochure at home since I do not have Adobe Photoshop. It allows me to not have to go on campus to the computer lab. Cloud computing and open source software will be helpful to me in my major. I will have access to some of the best equipment on campus and when I begin to work in my field. I have limited funds at this time, so open source software will be of great help to me when working on personal projects.
I believe that cloud computing and open source software is a valuable tool in society. They are products that are created for everyone. It is not just for the privilege it is for those that cannot afford the software that are all great to use but does not line up with our budget. It was created for those children in grade school whose parents cannot afford to purchase expensive software. They can complete their assignments with open source software and cloud computing. I have a Google account that I use for my calendar. I have added my daughters dance calendar, and my wife’s calendar. I have a blogger account about my son and his journey with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Microsoft is now promoting cloud computing in commercials for Windows 7.
This video is about GOGRID teaching how to use cloud storage.

Social Tools & Cloud Computing
Social tools and cloud computing is evolving daily in our everyday life. Companies are racing daily to be the first to the table with new software and updates to their content. Delicious social bookmarking is a social network tool that is a great way to store your favorite website links. This helps you to avoid losing links you stored in your favorites if your computer decides it no longer work. Delicious also allows you to share your links with friends, family members, and the public.
As a production student delicious is a social tool I will be able to use in my career. I can store websites that I use to accomplish my work. I can also store my favorite links and share them with my co-workers. Delicious will also allow me to bookmark my competitor’s website, and follow what they are doing that is new. It will also allow me to bookmark industry sites that can tell me what equipment are new, events that are happening like conference and seminars, and what is going on in the industry.
The amount of social tools out there are unbelievable, it is hard to keep up with them all. In this day of open source software it will be an entrepreneurs dream in this service environment. Cloud computing shares resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and YouTube are the most popular. Digg is a social news website; you can follow top news stories in the last 24 hours. IKeepBookmarks like Delicious allows you to store your bookmarks for free. StumbleUpon is a discovery engine that allows you to find things that you like and catalog those items for you. If you like food the demo showed it will give you recipes magazines and other websites that are related to the type of food you like. The future creativity amongst the competitors is great. I recently read an article about millionaires before the age of 25. Many of these millionaires started a company that has something to do with the computers or internet websites. This is a trend we have to get use to; the easiest way to start a company today is to start an internet base company from the garage of your home.
The video I chose was a tutorial on how to use StumbleUpon.

Podcast
Let me start off by saying my podcast was terrible, absolutely down right awful. I apologize that you had to listen to it. I don’t know if it was because I was in the lab on campus trying not to disturb others but it was awful. Ok Now I can talk about podcasting.
This was not the first time I recorded audio for something. I was a radio station DJ so I had to record promos, PSAs, and commercials. Believe it or not I was a rapper, even I still do not believe that, and played drums in a band, and has spent time in recording studios. Even with all that experience in recording this was the first time that I have recorded a podcast. Using garage band was easy. I enjoyed putting the podcast together even though it sounds so terrible in the end. I was able to edit with relative ease and from the sound of the final product should have spent some time enhancing my voice and the podcast.
Podcast is something that I will be able to use as a production major. I will use it if I worked for a radio station to record show content and place the entire show online or just promotional clips. I will be able to use it in television to record the newscast and post online. I will also be able to use the video podcast to show the entire television news program. Podcasting will be a tool that will be a part of my life and my career.
Podcast seems like an interesting education tool. Considering Apple makes their product for the cool effect. It is really creative that many teachers and schools have tapped into the effect that Apple was creating to reach their students. Many times traditional schools are not interested in change the way they educated children because they believe the old way of sitting at a desk and writing on a blackboard works. I do not knock the traditional way of educating children, there is absolutely a place for that, but with the evolution of technology I think it is irresponsible for educators to not want to adapt to the way children of today learn. What Duke did with passing out iPods to their freshmen class in 2004 was a great way to use the resource of a new technology. I certainly hope that is a practice they have continued and other school will begin to make it a requirement to use in educating the children of this world.
With my podcast sounding so bad, I chose a video of recording a podcast in garage band.

Digital Storytelling
Digital storytelling helped me to develop a story for my son’s blog. I have used sound slide before, but the IMovie and Animoto were easier to use. It allowed me to not only tell the story of Joshua’s everyday life, but to also show images about what he deals with on a daily basis. Digital storytelling was something that I wanted to do, but did not have the knowledge to be able to complete this type of project. I am very excited to be able to now tell not only Joshua’s story, but also the story of my daughter Julia dance competitions.
Digital storytelling is something that will benefit me as a production student. I listened to a group of Telecommunication Advisory Council members and they have informed us to learn how to tell good stories. I am currently enrolled in a news media writing class that teaches how to create stories for radio news, television news, promotional advertising, and PSAs. We are learning how to write to videos at this time telling the story of what is in the video without talking about what is on the video. Digital storytelling will me enhance my storytelling ability in productions.
The digital storytelling lesson was one that I learn a lot about. I did not know that there was a nonprofit center for digital storytelling or a definition for the term. In this digital world telling stories are a way of life. We share our stories via blogs, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and many other medium. I looked forward to learning IMovie and Animoto. Animoto was a cool tool to use and the video that I was able to create about my son and his genetic disease of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) was important for me to tell. The digital storytelling tools and the visual literacy tools have been great tools to learn to use. Imagine I would not have believed that there were over 50 different tools to help us tell our digital stories. I look forward to familiarizing myself with some of these tools and using them to tell my digital stories.
I chose the Discovering Digital Stories YouTube video because it states that no more do you have to be a film maker to be able to tell a digital story.

Visual Literacy
This week lesson the Visual Literacy project with photo shop was one that I had anxiety about. Not because I did not believe I would be able to complete the assignment, but after looking at the 21 page directions I scratched my head a little. Ok a lot. I had never used photo shop before so it was a new experience for me. I have to say I enjoyed working on the photo shop project of the athletic shoes. I do not own photo shop but whenever I need to create a project I will be able to go to one of the computer labs on campus and work on some of my personal work as well.
Photo shop is a tool I will use as a production student to complete many project. I currently have an entrepreneur class that requires me to create photos for an assignment of a company that I would possibly start. Each week I have to turn in a visual assignment and have been using power point and save as a jpeg. I really like the fact that I can create layers to complete my projects. There will be other class in the production department that will require me to create project using photo shop.
Photo shop is something that I will be able to use not only in my major, but also to create personal projects for myself. I like this lesson, because being able to take photos and enhance their voice is pretty cool. The Picture This: Visual Literacy Article states that “By looking at and studying photographs with your students, you will help them better understand the complexities of their world.” I do not believe I ever look at photos that way but it makes so much more sense. I recently attended a funeral of colleague’s wife and they had picture of her everywhere. I remember thinking I don’t like taking pictures. Her husband believed it was important to tell the story of her life through pictures, that there was a fifteen minutes videography on her entire life. After completing this lesson I do understand how complex our world is, but I now also understand just how that story can be told with pictures. That is why during disasters like Katrina in New Orleans and the earthquake in Haiti the pictures speak volumes to the agony that took place. The photo ideas were good to see things from a different perspective. The many different place the monkeys where layered on, shows how creative one is allowed to be when implementing visual literacy.
The video that I have chosen is a YouTube video of Windows 7 Mac Theme Background: Photoshop Tutorial.

Tech Tools for Critical Thinking
Open Source Software has revolutionized the internet. As a part of Web 2.0 open source software has allow greater creativity among users of the content. To think that the term was coined by in a marketing campaign for free software. Today it allows users to edit and change content at the speed of thought. There are ten different criteria that must comply with to be considered open source. The criteria’s are free redistribution, source code, derived works, integrity of the author’s code, no discrimination against persons or groups, no discrimination against fields of endeavor, distribution of license, license must not be specific to a product, license must not restrict other software, and license must be technology-neutral.
In Telecommunications, open source software is very valuable to multimedia distribution. Sharing content today is necessary to have a successful media company. Though many traditional media has failed in their attempt to use open source content there is a growing number that are succeeding. Windy Citizen, The Huffington Post, and TBD are a few of those that are succeeding very well. I will be using open source software to create video content, audio content, mind mapping stories, posting those stories on blogs, YouTube, and Facebook. I am not currently as familiar with many of the open source software out there. I still don’t have a Facebook account but will create one soon I hope. I will have to gain knowledge of these sources to become an effective production student.
Tech tools for critical thinking conveyed knowledge for students to think openly about how they learn. Learning to use mind mapping in Inspiration to show how certain tools work with your major. Learning Theories and styles and critical thinking show that I am a Visual Modality and Tactile-Kinesthetic Modality learner. I always knew that I was a visual learning, you show me how to do something and I can grasp what to do. The open source software taught me there is software available to users for free. It is interesting to learn that companies basically give the software away for free and charge you for support help if you ever need it. The use of text cloud in Wordle to summarize, word content was cool. I liked the 16th way to use Wordle to compare Romeo & Juliet to West Side Story.
The reason I chose this video was because it was about what open source software are available on Mac.

Multimedia
Web Resource, Multimedia, and Hypermedia are the growing trend in society. Everyone today has the opportunity to create a form of multimedia today. Our cell phones are now smart phones. We take pictures of everything and send to our friend, hypertext, hyperlinks, and video all the time. The world today operates in a multimedia format whether we like it or not.
Multimedia is becoming more a part of my life. When I volunteer at WUFT I am operating a camera that is sending live video, uploaded by a satellite to your home, so you can watch the 6:30 news. When I start taking production type classes and learn how to use different forms of multimedia. Creating fonts on the news cast to inform the people at home the name of the anchors or the names of the people in the story. I will have to edit videos for production using still pictures and video. This is the creativity that I am looking forward to learning when I get into my core classes for Telecommunications.
The lesson this week was very enlightening the Designing Instruction Media using the four key guidelines; Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity. The power point templates that is bad to use. What background to use, the type of text to use. The information of what is a hypertext, multimedia and hyperlink are terms I have to know and use in Telecommunications. The exercise on the WTO website is something that will allow me to be more careful of sites that exist. Learning how to find the publisher of a website and history of a website will be something I use when doing research. It is amazing that there are so many tools out there for educators to use to in teaching our children. We will have to be more careful of the sites that our children use to conduct their homework. Web based resources are great tools to help your child learn in a fun environment. BrainPop is a site that an Assistant Principal told me to have my daughter use to help her with math. Multimedia will be used both critically and creatively when creating content for me. It is something that I use now, but will use more and more as I learn how to use more of the products that exist. Hypermedia is something that would be a great tool for teachers or even trainers in the business world to pass on information for people they are trying to educate about a product or new policies.
This video is about a Multimedia University in Malaysia.
Presentation: Copyright & Issues in Educational Technology Resource
Copyright and issues in educational technology resource goes hand in hand. There are more online classes that require students to create interactive content. If you are going to create content and use music or video in your assignment you have to be familiar with copyright and intellectual property rights. It is great to know that in the classroom we may receive special consideration under the fair use doctrine.
Knowing that there is special consideration I will be somewhat at ease when applying copyright laws and the code of best practice in fair use. In Telecommunication College we have to create a lot of content. Many of the courses in this major call for video and written creation. It is very important that you use attribution to what you have created properly giving credit to the original creator. I will have to make sure that I do not obtain things illegally or in bad faith.
The material in this week assignment was very informative. The technology that is available to us today at the Go2Web20 directory of Web 2.0 applications. The web 2.0 companies that I chose to review were Socialwok; they help organizations improve collaboration and communication. Vanityvid allows you to have video profile picture shows on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Wibbitz allows its users to take static web content like images, and turn them into interactive video. I truly liked the “What is Copyright” and “User’s Rights, Section 107” videos. That was either very creative or someone had too much time on their hand. I would like to believe it was very creative. It is not easy to write a song and to take a law and make them into a song that is pretty cool. I learned in the Copyright PDF that the preferred way to register a basic copyright is to complete it online. The “Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education” places my mind at ease. To know that I do have some rights when it comes to using other people creation I don’t always have to pay to use it. The articles were a little long but as a Telecommunication Production student it was something I need to learn.
The source that I chose started with a young man singing a parity of a Beastie Boys song about copyright. The video discuss using www.myfreecopyright.com to register you original content and you want to protect it and receive credit for your creation. The video talks about someone that had registered with the above site was able to shut down someone that later open a site with the same content after he did, because he had registered his content on my free copyright website.
The issues in Educational Technology give a good understanding of the things that teachers are dealing with. I always heard many complain about NCLB, saying that they are passing children who are not doing well in school. It was good to see the four reform principles the law is based on. The National Ed. Tech. Plan and Teacher Preparation/Training, where teachers continued education is important in our classroom. I do wonder if this access to online learning course is free. I’m not certain that the digital divide can ever be closed. Technology is big business and as much as some of these companies offer free software to schools or computers, it is still not in ever home.

Learning Entries Blog #1 Week 2: Educational Technology
The orientation to Apple’s Mac OS X was good. It was cool to watch MAC commercial’s I’m a Mac/I’m a PC. Apparently the video to Microsoft was pull down by the user so I was unable to watch it. The path that both companies have blazed has been an interesting one. Mac IPO creating 300 millionaires. Microsoft IPO created 4 billionaires and 12,000 millionaires.
The Mac notebook is a product I will have to purchase for my major. I am a Telecommunications production major and this past spring the college stated that all incoming freshman to the major will have to own a Mac. I will use the Mac for editing video using Final Cut Pro. The WUFT television studio was renovated between the summer and fall semester and the Mac computer was installed to handle the fonts that you see on the news program. Students will have templates of how the font should look, but will have to custom make the fonts for each news cast. (E.g. first and last name of anchors)
I always knew the competitive nature of both companies exist. I did not know that the features on both computers were similar. The only differences between the two systems are the terminologies being used. Mac use the term Aliases that are shortcuts to open applications, folders or files. Microsoft use the term short cut. You log off from the Mac using the apple menu. You log off Microsoft using the start menu. I completed the survey and realized I did not have a lot of knowledge about the Mac, I hope to become more skilled on the Mac as I am now with the PC. The Did You Know 2.0 (2007) and Did You Know 3.0 videos were eye opening. It is shameful to see that the emphasis that our Politician has placed on education is leaving us far behind other countries. The videos seem to portrait the United States as a PC, and India and China is the Mac. I have always said that if you walk into a politician’s office you will see all their degrees on their wall. Yet when it comes to balancing the budget education is always the first thing they cut, why because they already have their degree and their children are receiving the best education money can buy. When the “Did You Know” video is created 10 years from now will it be an amazing surprise that America will regain its education prowess or will other countries far surpass it, yet continue to come here for college. It was interesting to learn how far the internet has come since 1957. The future of the internet is to connect all services, to mobile, then to an internet of things. It is interesting that it is a European interest and not an American movement. The first internet router and email shows just how advance our mind function when it comes to technology. Growing up on the internet was crazy. I have a 9-year-old daughter that has an account at Build-A-Bearville, and many people request to be her friend. It is amazing that a teacher is making the statement that we have to take a look at what we know consider cheating. I guess I am either going to have to trust her or invest in Spector Pro a spy software that will show me all that she does on the internet.
The outside resource I chose is a YouTube video titled “A Basic Mac Tutorial-Moving to a Mac”. I chose this video because it will be relevant to the development of my skills as a Mac user. The video is teaching new purchasers of a Mac, how to transfer files from their PC to a Mac. I plan on purchasing a Mac notebook either this fall or in the spring and will have to transfer information from my PC to the Mac.
