Learning Entries Blog #1 Week 2: Educational Technology

The orientation to Apple’s Mac OS X was good. It was cool to watch MAC commercial’s I’m a Mac/I’m a PC. Apparently the video to Microsoft was pull down by the user so I was unable to watch it. The path that both companies have blazed has been an interesting one. Mac IPO creating 300 millionaires. Microsoft IPO created 4 billionaires and 12,000 millionaires.

The Mac notebook is a product I will have to purchase for my major. I am a Telecommunications production major and this past spring the college stated that all incoming freshman to the major will have to own a Mac. I will use the Mac for editing video using Final Cut Pro. The WUFT television studio was renovated between the summer and fall semester and the Mac computer was installed to handle the fonts that you see on the news program. Students will have templates of how the font should look, but will have to custom make the fonts for each news cast. (E.g. first and last name of anchors)

I always knew the competitive nature of both companies exist. I did not know that the features on both computers were similar. The only differences between the two systems are the terminologies being used. Mac use the term Aliases that are shortcuts to open applications, folders or files. Microsoft use the term short cut. You log off from the Mac using the apple menu. You log off Microsoft using the start menu. I completed the survey and realized I did not have a lot of knowledge about the Mac, I hope to become more skilled on the Mac as I am now with the PC. The Did You Know 2.0 (2007) and Did You Know 3.0 videos were eye opening. It is shameful to see that the emphasis that our Politician has placed on education is leaving us far behind other countries. The videos seem to portrait the United States as a PC, and India and China is the Mac. I have always said that if you walk into a politician’s office you will see all their degrees on their wall. Yet when it comes to balancing the budget education is always the first thing they cut, why because they already have their degree and their children are receiving the best education money can buy. When the “Did You Know” video is created 10 years from now will it be an amazing surprise that America will regain its education prowess or will other countries far surpass it, yet continue to come here for college. It was interesting to learn how far the internet has come since 1957. The future of the internet is to connect all services, to mobile, then to an internet of things. It is interesting that it is a European interest and not an American movement. The first internet router and email shows just how advance our mind function when it comes to technology. Growing up on the internet was crazy. I have a 9-year-old daughter that has an account at Build-A-Bearville, and many people request to be her friend. It is amazing that a teacher is making the statement that we have to take a look at what we know consider cheating. I guess I am either going to have to trust her or invest in Spector Pro a spy software that will show me all that she does on the internet.

The outside resource I chose is a YouTube video titled “A Basic Mac Tutorial-Moving to a Mac”. I chose this video because it will be relevant to the development of my skills as a Mac user. The video is teaching new purchasers of a Mac, how to transfer files from their PC to a Mac. I plan on purchasing a Mac notebook either this fall or in the spring and will have to transfer information from my PC to the Mac.
